My question is, why would a VB developer migrate to Java, unless otherwise he/she is forced because of Job security in the current market or getting more $. The natural transition for a VB developer would be towards VB.NET or C#, I can simply say .NET. why the hell he/she chooses Java before thinking about .NET, if choice is left to himself/herself? :-) .

Well you have to understand that Sun is fighting back at Microsoft for the release of J#.NET, they are like trying to take programmers from anyway... including those awesome VB programmers ;)

I don't mind coding in Java, because technology is technology and is truly mankind (for that matter womankind) development. So, every technology will have its own merits and pitfall.
And, Sun it was a great company. their contributions to IT are so many prior to Java, like TCL/Tk, NFS etc. But when the started mobilizing Java, they said, Java is better than C++ and their techno seminar marketing butt heads drew parallels between C++ and Microsoft and bashed both same equally. When Microsoft came out with super good JVM, they felt jealous and sued Microsoft.
