I know there are resources on the web to learn just about anything, but I'm considering buying some books on Silverlight, LINQ, and Microsoft AJAX (different implementation, of course).
I'm currently using VB.NET and VS 2005 at work. I downloaded VS 2K8 Express Edition at home, so I can expand my skillset, and I'm looking for some good book suggestions.
So, do you have any good advice on how to select a book? I mean, I know Amazon has reviews, but I don't know how much credence to put in them.
I really only want to buy one of each (one Silverlight, one AJAX, and one LINQ), and I'm definitely going to buy them all in C# (that's the way things are pretty much heading now anyway).
Any advice?

With regard to choosing a book, I think you can put some credence in Amazon's reviews as long as there are plenty of them. If there are only a couple of reviews, then they may be reviews which the publisher has asked someone to write in return for being given an advanced copy of the book and which may therefore not be completely impartial.
If there are sample chapters you can read, then this is perhaps the best guide of all as to whether you're going to find a particular book suitable for your needs.
Unfortunately, I don't have books on any of the areas you mentioned and can't therefore give you any specific recommendations. However, I did recently buy a book called <a target="_new" href="http://www.amazon.com/3-0-Nutshell-Desktop-Reference-OReilly/dp/0596527578">C# 3.0 in a Nutshell</a> which contains some excellent stuff on LINQ. If you're moving over from VB.Net to C#, you may find this book useful as a general reference.

Thanks for the reply! I'll check into that book as well.
