My IT department is run by a bunch of Apple and Linux heads....


Not that I don't like either ... But I don't like it when there is a noticeable bias aginst my windows environment... Let me enplane... First let me break down the os percentages here, 20% Apple, 1% Linux and 79% Windows. IT department 100% Apple... If you use either apple or linux here you get the latest version of those operating systems... If you use windows you use Windows XP...thats it. Now I can understand this if you NOT a power user, but I am a windows programmer and I find Windows XP rather limiting.. They are forcing the programmers to use Windows XP only because the IT department does not want us to use 64 bit windows operating systems... When I ask them why they answer like ones father would "Because we said so". I heard from someone that was in the know that it was really because the IT department has security concerns with windows 64bit operating systems. But that makes no sense, every article I read about security on 64 bit OS from Microsoft are MORE secure then XP. So I must conclude that it's either because they don't have the skills to administer 64 bit machines or they just want to be jerks...



My department is about to develop a rather large web site for this company and I want to take advantage of a Microsoft 64bit environment to do this. But since IT is blocking and management has no reason not to believe there IT department, I am going to have to argue my point rather aggressively. I am going to have to go to management and enplane to them why I am right and the IT department is wrong.

I need ammunition! This is the help I need from any source I can get... Links to articles, experiences pro or con on this subject would be great!! Some of this needs to be understandable by management directly... But I do need nuts and bolts understanding so I can address the IT department directly.


So I guess the real question is... How do I convince my IT department that 64bit development machines are ok?
